We show that a recently observed electroacoustic effect in chiral smec
tic C liquid crystals can be explained in terms of a reversible dynam
ic cross-coupling between the velocity field and the polarization, whi
ch exists for chiral smectic liquid crystals, but not for other liquid
crystalline phases such as nematics cholesterics and non-chiral smect
ics. Further experiments to test our interpretation are suggested.
