Abstract
We examined a 35-year-old male case of acquired Fanconi syndrome induc
ed by a mixture of Chinese crude drugs. Renal glycosuria, hypokalemia,
hypophosphatemia, metabolic acidosis, a low threshold of tubular bica
rbonate excretion, and generalized aminoaciduria were observed after t
he patient had taken the drugs for 6 months. When he stopped taking th
em, all laboratory data improved. He took the drugs again on his own j
udgment, leading to a second bout of Fanconi syndrome. This is the fir
st case in which Chinese crude drugs have been known to cause acquired
Fanconi syndrome.
