In this report an overview is given of the contribution of cognitive a
pproaches to behavioral medicine. The (possible) contribution of cogni
tive therapy is reviewed in the area of coronary heart disease, obesit
y, bulimia nervosa, chronic pain, benign headache, cancer, acquired im
munodeficiency syndrome/human immunodeficiency virus and asthma. Altho
ugh the relative contribution of cognitive therapy varies across these
various disorders, its positive effects are now well established and
new advances undoubtedly will be made in the next few years.
