Temperature changes associated with the stress-induced martensitic tra
nsformation in NiTi have been measured. The magnitude of the temperatu
re changes observed depends on the transformation rate and specimen-en
vironment heat transfer, with values of approximately 13 K being recor
ded for near-adiabatic conditions. The transformation induced temperat
ure change was found to have a marked effect on stress-strain behaviou
r. Specimen temperatures calculated from a heat balance analysis are s
hown to agree well with experimental measurements.
