A method for the determination of the effect of the signal noise on vi
brational correlation functions and relaxation times obtained in stati
onary spectroscopic measurements is proposed. It rests upon the assump
tion that electronic noise is mainly due to the photon counting which,
for fast electronics, is described by Poisson statistics. The applica
tion of this method leads to results expressed as standard deviations
which, for correlation functions, appear in very close agreement with
the conclusions of statistical analysis, while for the relaxation time
s the results are lower than those delivered by statistical analysis.
