Abstract
Phase equilibria in the ternary glass-forming system ZrF4-BaF2-NaF des cribed in this paper are based on experimental data obtained by therma l analysis and X-ray diffraction. A thermodynamic model for the molten fluorides based on equilibria between proposed complex species formed by the Lewis acid ZrF4 is presented. The model indicates a transition from a near ideal ionic to a weak polymer character on going from bas ic to acidic melts.
