Abstract
0.5 g of ZBLAN glass is attacked by HCl or deionized water. NaBaZr2F11 , gamma-BaZrF6 and BaZr2F10.2H2O in single crystals and in powder the fluorides LaF3 and ThF4 or a LaF3-ThF4 compound have been characterize d. For intermediate (3M) HCl concentrations, an unidentified crystalli zed phase is mixed with a part of glass. The dissolution becomes rapid ly incongruent; most of the barium remains in the solid phase and the sodium presents a very high dissolution ratio.
