Abstract
Extrinsic scattering due to various defects very strongly influences o ptical losses in chalcogenide glasses and fibres. The relationships be tween scattering and the presence of homopolar S-S and As-As bonds, th e concentration of H2S, the quantity of bubbles and other defects are discussed. Scattering is measured at the wavelength of a He-Ne laser; concentration of As-As bonds is determined by a chemical method.
