We have investigated the properties of surface optic waves (SOW's), su
ch as surface polaritons or guided waves, in ultrathin films sandwiche
d by identical slightly lossy materials. It has been found that the im
aginary part of dielectric constant Im (epsilon(s)) of surrounding mat
erials strongly affects characteristics of SOW. For example, the propa
gation length of SOW is remarkably changed by the existence of Im (eps
ilon(s)).
