Experimental data on continuous radiation spectra of neon, argon, kryp
ton, and xenon plasmas are treated that have been derived over the las
t 30 years. Their agreement with one another and with theory is analyz
ed, as well as the dependence of the optical characteristics on the pa
rameters of plasma. The calculation is made in a quasi-classical appro
ximation by the quantum defect method in view of the effect of interpa
rticle interaction leading to the shift and smoothing over of photoion
ization thresholds. Good agreement is observed between theory and expe
riment in the case of a moderately dense plasma (n(e) = 10(16)-10(18)
cm(-3)). A tendency is revealed toward a decrease of experimental data
as compared with theory at high densities.
