Ba. Marshall, THE SYSTEMATIC POSITION OF LAROCHEA FINLAY, 1927, AND INTRODUCTION OFA NEW GENUS AND 2 NEW SPECIES (GASTROPODA, SCISSURELLIDAE), Journal of molluscan studies, 59, 1993, pp. 285-294
Species of the gastropod genus Larochea Finlay, 1927 are shown to be s
cissurellids without an anal shell slit or foramen. The New Zealand sp
ecies, L. miranda Finlay, 1927 and L. secunda Powell, 1937, brood thei
r young in the right subpallial cavity against a modified inner lip th
at is set well behind the apertural plane. Larochea scitula n.sp. is b
ased on shells from Wanganella Bank, southern Norfolk Ridge. Larocheop
sis n.gen. is introduced for a minute species from off northern New Ze
aland that lacks a shell brood chamber. Larochea miranda and Larocheop
sis amplexa n.sp. are either gonochoristic with smaller males or conse
cutive hermaphrodites, while Larochea secunda and L. scitula are evide
ntly gonochoristic, having mature males and females of similar size.
