The cw resonance Raman spectra of the products of electrochemical oxid
ation of 4-(N,N-dialkylamino)biphenyl compounds, with alkyl = methyl,
methyl-d3 or ethyl, are analyzed and compared with the time-resolved r
esonance Raman spectra of the photogenerated radical cation of these a
mines. The anodic oxidation is shown to lead to the formation of the r
espective N,N,N',N'-tetraalkylbenzidine radical cation and dication, a
nd a mechanism scheme for the oxidation is proposed.
