A case of anticoagulant rodenticide toxicity in a dog associated with
remarkable ocular and periocular bleeding is presented. The clinical d
iagnosis was confirmed by a considerably prolonged one stage prothromb
in time (OSPT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), sligh
tly altered thrombin time and a platelet count in a low normal range.
Secondary alterations occurred in form of a mechanical lagophthalmus,
xerophthalmia and a secondary glaucoma of the left eye. Besides sympto
matical therapy, Vitamin K1 was administered as an antidote in a loadi
ng dose of 10 mg/kg BW IV, which was reduced to a dosage of 5 and 2,5
mg/kg BW orally. Despite successful treatment of the intoxication, a p
ermanent and considerable loss of vision of the left eye resulted as a
consequence of the temporary glaucoma.
