The large Stokes shift of the fluorescence of 4'-(1-Pyrenyl)-acetophen
one and 4'-(1-Pyrenyl)-N,N-dimethylaniline observed in polar solvents
indicates that a significant structural transformation takes place aft
er excitation. There are two alternative interpretations of the experi
mental facts: TICT state formation, or relaxation with a simultaneous
twist of the donor and acceptor subgroups towards a co-planar geometry
. The results of INDO/S calculations support the second mechanism.
