Abstract
A planar directional coupler which consists of two identical leaky wav eguide is, firstly, described. This configuration permits observing di rectly the light coupling between two parallel waveguides. The light l eaked out through the buffer layers of these waveguides allows detecti ng the mode splitting caused by the interaction of optical fields of t wo closely spaced waveguides. Another interesting particularity of the intensity pattern leaked out of these waveguides is the spatial perio dicity of the double bright lines.
