G. Sangster et al., THE VALIDITY OF HUTT BENDER-GESTALT SCORING SYSTEM FOR HOSTILITY - CORRELATION WITH THE INTERPERSONAL-BEHAVIOR SURVEYS AGGRESSION SCALES, Psychology, 30(2), 1993, pp. 22-27
A number of clinicians use the Bender-Gestalt test for personality ass
essment. The Bender-Gestalt was originally developed to evaluate visua
l motor integration skills as an aid to diagnosing organic conditions
such as mental retardation and other types of central nervous system d
ysfunction. The ability of the Bender Gestalt to yield meaningful data
about personality and psychopathology continues to be controversial.
Max Hutt developed the Psychopathology Scale to quantify this informat
ion. In order to examine the validity of Hutt's scoring system for hos
tility, the Interpersonal Behavior Survey was concurrently administere
d with the Bender-Gestalt to 46 participants. Results indicated that f
ive Hutt hostility indices were correlated with IBS aggression. The fi
ndings provide limited support for the Bender-Gestalt as a personality
measure.
