Abstract
A bulk Nd:glass laser has been mode locked, for the first time to our knowledge, with a linear external cavity that includes a vibrating mir ror. By use of intracavity dispersion compensation, pulses of 300-fs d uration have been generated. The effect of the mirror movement is attr ibuted to a start mechanism of the passive coupled-cavity mode locking and yields an expression for the optimal mirror velocity that is in q ualitative agreement with the experiment.
