Practice trends in counseling have emphasized the values of brevity an
d diversity in the delivery of services. In this article the author re
views central elements of brief therapy and multicultural counseling,
highlighting the tension created by their differing developmental assu
mptions. Drawing on recent science and practice literature, the articl
e outlines and illustrates an integrative, multicontextual model of co
unseling that bridges these important trends by intervening at the int
erface between individuals and their physical, social, and cultural co
ntexts.
