Despite several extensive reviews of the literature within the past de
cade, the treatment of oxyphil cell tumors of the thyroid gland remain
s controversial. The foremost questions today concern the acceptable c
riteria for diagnosis of oxyphil malignancies and the appropriate surg
ical treatment of these neoplasms. This review provides a forum for de
bate on the treatment of oxyphil neoplasms, with emphasis on their uni
que histopathologic features and unpredictable clinical behavior.
