Double carbonylation of phenethyl bromide into benzylpyruvic acid in t
he presence of a base in hydroalcoholic medium was investigated. The i
nfluence of various parameters, such as carbon monoxide pressure, stir
ring speed, the nature of the base and the presence of an alkaline iod
ide is reported. The role of these last two parameters in the reaction
mechanism is discussed. Also, various catalysts were found to catalys
e this reaction and the use of cobalt dichloride as a catalyst precurs
or may open opportunities for industrial applications.
