Abstract
The experimental dissection of the ways that the various cells and mol ecules of the immune system interact to promote virus clearance has be en greatly facilitated by the availability of mice with targeted disru ptions of key genes. New insights are emerging, and details of host re sistance mechanisms that could only be inferred for the in vivo situat ion are now being clearly established.
