This article examines the issues associated with monitoring the perfor
mance of medium to large scale databases in corporate information syst
em's environments that are predominately end user oriented. Monitoring
and evaluation of larger database systems is necessary in order to pr
ovide effective access, security, audit, efficiency, and control in a
computer-based environment. A database system must perform at a level
that is acceptable to both database users and the database administrat
ion team.
