Various banding techniques have been used to characterize the architec
ture of chromosomes of Indian domestic pigs (desi). The banding techni
ques used in karyotype analysis were conventional staining, trypsin G-
banding, C- banding and NOR - banding. The desi pig contained 38 chro
mosomes. G-banding results are quite comparable with the standard G-ba
nded karyotype as described by Reading Conference. Similarly no differ
ences were observed in G-, C- and NOR- banding patterns between desi a
nd Landrace pig breeds. However, C-banding showed some variation, but
the variation is individual specific. The results also suggested that
the C-banding is not uniform in each karyotype. This resulted in 3 typ
es of heterochromatin in the genomes of Indian domestic pig.
