Abstract
The role of dipole-dipole interactions in determining the Gibbs energy and entropy of solvation of the alkali metal halides in water is cons idered within the context of the mean spherical approximation. When th ese interactions are included, one obtains a much improved description of the dependence of the thermodynamic functions on ionic size over a wide range of this parameter. The significance of the present results for solvation data in water and other polar solvents is discussed.
