High intensity proton pulses of 50 ns length were used to modify polyi
mide surfaces. The deposited energy and power density were similar to
the corresponding experiments with UV laser pulses. Due to the constan
t range of the protons a well-defined layer of about 1.5 mum is heated
. The induced optical absorption, electrical conductivity, and the abl
ation were studied. The results are consistently explained by a therma
l model.
