A new technique to achieve smooth laser irradiation profiles on laser
fusion targets is evaluated numerically and experimentally. In this te
chnique, smoothing is obtained by using a spectral dispersing optic an
d a random-phase plate placed in front of a focusing lens employing th
e broad-bandwidth of KrF lasers. Experimental results and numerical ca
lculations agree well, verifying that this simple optical system is ef
fective for smooth irradiation on targets.
