We investigate, for purposes of remote sensing, the spherically backsc
attered spectra of acoustic realizations of localized wave solutions t
o the homogeneous wave equation. The solutions represent broadband foc
used interference patterns whose focusing properties have been demonst
rated to be superior to those of equivalent monochromatic (i.e., cw) s
olutions, in the context of multi-time-derivative transmit-receive sys
tems. The interference patterns are acoustically launched with a synth
etic hydrophone array. The backscattered spectra of several different
sized steel and aluminum spheres have been obtained. Analysis indicate
s that the sphere radius can be readily extracted from these spectra.
