Abstract
Data on cylindrical free convection in water near 4-degrees-C are comp ared with a theory previously developed for a fluid having a density m aximum. The main features of experimental curves are well reproduced b y theory and it is shown that the typical temperature arrests observed in free cooling of water are due to the particular profile of the den sity which propagates from the boundary layer inside the bulk of the f luid (the central nucleus). Here, we report a density behavior shown b y water in convective state.
