Abstract
Isospin-1 vector fields are minimally introduced into the nonlinear si gma model. The hamiltonian formalism is used to show that the presence of a local chiral fourth order term is necessary for the consistency of the theory. It is also shown that the proposed theory is canonicall y equivalent to a description of the rho-meson in terms of antisymmetr ic tensor fields.
