Abstract
Continuous cultivation of Baker's yeast was carried out in a convergin g-diverging tube airlift fermentor. The dilution rate was varied from 0.08 to 0.165 h-1. The residual sugar conc. was maintained below 0.15 g/l. Pure oxygen was sparged with air to maintain 50% oxygen saturatio n. The trend of the variation of cell mass, X, with the reciprocal of the dilution rate, D, did not correspond to the Monod chemostat model. The maximum dilution rate was found to be 0.165 h-1 for a cell mass e nhancement of 30%.
