Agricultural protective measures in an area of Bryansk Oblast, Russia,
contaminated by the accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant dec
reased the levels of Cs-137 in harvested plants by an average of 2.2 a
nd those in meadow and pasture-land vegetation by a factor of 2.8. The
effectiveness of the protective measures (fertilization with high lev
els of potassium and phosphorus, liming, cultivation of meadows) depen
ded on the type of soil and its particle-size composition and on the t
ypes of plants growing on it.
