Abstract
Using symmetry arguments we discuss the various possible helical struc tures that can show a longitudinal piezoelectric effect. Due to the re cent experimental verification of such an effect in some elastomeric c holesteric liquid crystals, we propose that what is called cholesteric s could actually represent different helical structures, which can be more complicated than the conventional (i.e. simple screw) model.
