Following strain differentiation of isolates of Candida albicans from
the mouths of a group of patients infected with the human immunodefici
ency virus, it was observed that the majority of morphotypes isolated
from the early stage of the infection were different from the morphoty
pes isolated from the advanced stages of the infection, and that a par
ticular morphotype (724), isolated from ARC and AIDS patients, was the
most common C. albicans morphotype to occur. Morphotype 724 was not d
etected in the HIV-Ab+ cohort. This report describes the study and dis
cusses the relevance of the findings in terms of prognostic significan
ce.
