Abstract
The technique of data assimilation in dynamical systems using the adjo int method is studied through investigation of a barotropic model of t he open ocean. A method is proposed, which increases the convergence p roperties of the steepest descent procedure in the problem of fitting the unknown boundary conditions to data. The problem of noise filterin g off the data via regularization is also considered.
