TRANSLATORS WORKBENCH PIVOT JE, EJ AND ONLINE MACHINE TRANSLATION SERVICE/

Translator's Workbench PIVOT/JE (translation from Japanese to English) and PIVOT/EJ (translation from English to Japanese) are translation a ssisting systems developed to reduce translation costs. Introduction o f PIVOT into a LAN environment, which enables a group of people workin g at one time to share dictionaries and other resources, is reported t o be cost effective. Some of the unique features of PIVOT are the foll owing: (1)It has adopted the pivot method of translation, which assume s interlingua, a universal semantic representation. (2)It supports pre -edit by detecting expressions that are difficult for the machine to t ranslate, and providing functions to help paraphrase them. In this pap er, the fundamentals of Machine Translation (MT) are introduced. They include the system configuration, the translation mechanism, and an ex ample of the MT-based translation process. Also, utilization of the MT service via a network is discussed.
