The dependence of light pulse location on the period of the modulating
function on the discharge current, resonator length and other paramet
ers has been measured for various visible and UV lines of the mode-loc
ked ion laser. It is shown that, when a laser is considerably above th
e threshold and the duration of the pulses is minimal, the losses in t
he mode-locking are high. The problems of simultaneous mode-locking fo
r 488.0 and 514.5 nm lines are demonstrated. Complete pulse evolution
(from appearance to disappearance) with variations of the basic laser
parameters is traced. A pulse is shown to have the minimal duration no
t in the single-pulse regime, but when the pulse is followed by a sate
llite. Experimental results do not contradict with the supermodes mode
l.
