Vv. Babintsev et al., ENERGY AND COORDINATE RESOLUTION OF A NONSEGMENTED ELECTROMAGNETIC CALORIMETER PROTOTYPE, Instruments and experimental techniques, 36(2), 1993, pp. 194-199
We determined the energy and coordinate resolution of nonsegmented lay
ered uranium calorimeters with scintillator cross-sections of 40 x 20
and 15 x 15 cm. The experimental data are compared with the results of
a computer simulation by the GEANT3.13 program. The results are in go
od agreement with analytical predictions for a calorimeter with uraniu
m plate thicknesses of 0.5 and 0.2 cm. The energy resolution for elect
rons with a momentum of 26.6 GeV/c amounts to 4.8 and 3.0 +/- 0.05%, r
espectively; the accuracy of the input-coordinate measurement of a pri
mary particle is better than 1 cm. We concluded that nonsegmented calo
rimeters with large cross-sections can be used in physical experiments
