Abstract
We consider a self-interacting scalar field theory in a slowly varying gravitational background field. Assuming that the temperature is high compared with some effective mass appearing naturally in the calculat ion we obtain the derivative expansion in the background field, the qu antity of central interest in the quasilocal approximation scheme.
