Abstract
Canistrolithus valliformis gen. et sp. nov. (Syracosphaeraceae, Prymne siophyta) is described as a new coccolithophorid inhabiting the subtro pical waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Comparisons are made with the genus Alisphaera Heimdal, and in particular with A. unicornis Okada et McIntyre. Coccolith morphology was studied in detail with th e scanning electron microscope, with emphasis on the multilayered cocc olith wall and the structures associated with the rim.
