Y. Mizuhara et al., MICROSTRUCTURE OF SI3N4 WHISKER PREPARED FROM DIATOMACEOUS-EARTH, Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 12(2), 1993, pp. 111-116
Silicon nitride whiskers were prepared by carbo-thermal reduction and
nitridation of diatomaceous earth at temperature of 1350-degrees-C und
er the presence of nitrogen and ammonia. Scanning and transmission ele
ctron microscopy (SEM), electron probe micro-analysis (TEM) and X-ray
diffraction were used to characterize the microstructure. SEM studies
indicated that the whiskers were quite straight and hexagonal in cross
-section. The whiskers were found to be highly crystalline, as determi
ned by TEM analysis.
