A pilot plant which has been used to examine the suitability of a numb
er of treatment options for upgrading North West Water's water-treatme
nt plant at Huntingdon, Chester, is described. Processes tested includ
e biological pretreatment using a fluidized sand bed to remove mangane
se and ammonia, chemical coagulation, chemical oxidation using chlorin
e, ozone and potassium permanganate, and both primary and secondary fi
ltration with sand and granular activated carbon. The reduction of tri
halomethanes and pesticides was also investigated.
