Abstract
Genomic DNAs of Escherichia coli O157:H7 strains isolated from patient s and food samples were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. The rare-cutting endonucleases SfiI and XbaI generated 6 and 10 distin ct genomic profiles, respectively, for the 22 strains analyzed, indica ting that this technique may find application for epidemiologic studie s. Summation of XbaI fragments from five E. coli 0157:H7 strains estim ated the genomic length at ca. 4.7 Mb.
