The biosynthetic pathways to spiciferone A and spicifernin were invest
igated by means of incorporation experiments with [1-C-13], [2-C-13],
[1,2-C-13], and [1-C-13,H-2(3)] acetate and [S-(CH3)-C-13]-L-methionin
e. The incorporation patterns suggested that they are produced from a
common precursor, which is derived from a hexaketide and two C1 units,
after undergoing modifications including the unique C-C bond cleavage
by retroaldol condensation.
