We have tested a novel method of reading out light from long scintilla
tors by embedding waveshifting fibers in longitudinal grooves made in
the scintillators which are then connected to a photomultiplier (PM).
With PMs on both ends of the fibers we have obtained attenuation lengt
hs of over 5 m and light outputs of over 5 photo-electrons per MeV fro
m both sides of a BC408 scintillator with five 2 mm BCF92 fast green w
aveshifting fibers using a Hamamatsu green extended R580-17 PM. With a
reflector at one end of the fibers, we have easily obtained over 10 m
attenuation lengths. Also presented are first results using inexpensi
ve acrylic scintillators with this method.
