A readout system has been developed to facilitate the digitization and
subsequent display of image data from two-dimensional, pixellated, fl
at-panel, amorphous silicon imaging arrays. These arrays have been des
igned specifically for medical x-ray imaging applications. The readout
system is based on hardware and software developed for various experi
ments at CERN and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Additional an
alog signal Processing- and digital control electronics were construct
ed specifically for this application. We report on the form of the res
ulting data acquisition system, discuss aspects of its performance, an
d consider the compromises which were involved in its design.
