A compact gamma-camera has been constructed using a 3 mm thick single
NaI(Tl) crystal viewed by a 5 inch diameter Hamamatsu position-sensiti
ve photomultiplier tube (R3292) [1, 2]. In order to use, this system in
applications where the counting rate is high, and at the same time fl
exibility of data handling is desired, a faster data acquisition and p
rocessing system is required. The. design and operation of two data co
llection and processing systems capable of handling events within 30 m
us are presented. One of the systems is based on the use of a commerci
al Vector32C/8500 processor board whilst the other makes use of multip
le T805 transputers. A comparison of the two systems is provided.
