To study vicinal water structure around polystyrene latex particles di
fferential thermal analysis (DTA) has been utilized. Measurements of p
rogrammable water thermodesorption from polystyrene surfaces under dyn
amic and quasi-isothermal conditions were made. Therefore, the adsorpt
ion potential distribution function was calculated and the hydrophobic
ity of polystyrene surfaces determined. DTA is presented as a useful m
ethod to study the interfacial properties of polymer colloids.
