Abstract
A preliminary study to assess the origin and evolution of polichlorodi benzofurans (PCDFs) and polichlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) in a drink ing water treatment plant (DWTP) was undertaken. Samples of coagulatio n sludges and exhausted granular activated carbon (GAG) were collected from a DWTP. Owing to the similar congener profiles obtained from slu dges and GAG, a subsequent study of chlorination influence was carried out. Sludge samples from a treatment with and without the chlorinatio n step were analysed. A complementary study of the PCB content was mad e. The results obtained did not reveal a marked influence of chlorinat ion in the formation of PCDFs/PCDDs. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
