Abstract
Tannins are a possible replacement for red lead in primary paints used for the corrosion protection of steel structures but their reaction m echanism is controversial. Using gallic acid as a model compound the r eaction of tannins with rust is being investigated using FTIR spectros copy, X-ray diffraction and electrochemical reduction. The results obt ained by the different methods suggest that gallic acid inhibits the t ransformation of lepidocrocite into magnetite.
