The TRIUMF optically pumped polarized ion source presently produces a
15 muA dc beam of up to 80% polarized H- ions within a calculated norm
alized emittance of less than or similar 0.16 pi cm mrad. Extracted be
am parameters, after acceleration by the TRIUMF cyclotron to 230 MeV,
are approximately 4 muA with a proton polarization of 75%. The source
is based on optical pumping of Rh vapor by Ti:sapphire lasers, resulti
ng in improved polarization compared to previous results using Na as t
he polarized medium. The instrumentation and results of a detailed stu
dy of parameter dependences are reported.
